Cargo Fishings

Cargo Fishings

About 2.3 miles of single bank fishing on the right bank of the River Eden, Cumbria.

The fishing is divided into two four rod beats with the rods let on a day a week basis through the season (15th January to 14th October, both dates inclusive). Fishing will commence at 5am on the day of let and terminate at 5am the following day. The Cargo Fishings beat is situated on the lower river just downstream from Carlisle, and consists of approx 2.3 miles of single bank fishing from the right hand bank. The fishery is divided into 2 beats each fished by 4 rods, on a one day per week basis.

The river is tidal with tides of 7 meters partially effecting the lower beat, and tides of 7.5 meters and above effecting both beats, and whilst this can be a disadvantage at times, as fishing is impractical when the tide is flooding, this inconvenience is often outweighed by the fact that following the tide, fresh fish, are often pulled up into the beats by the influence of these tides.

The pools consist of a mixture of streamy runs and dubs which are suitable for fly, spin and bait fishing, with The Chicken Run Pool on the top beat being restricted to Fly Only, unless the river levels are above the dedicated marker.

Being situated at the lower end of the river, the beats fish best in low to medium heights of water, although at the back end, with fish running, surprisingly good catches are often taken in times of high water levels.

The 5 year average for the beat is 249 salmon & grilse, and the best single season catch since becoming a rod fishery was 804, taken in 1993 followed by 714 in 1994. In recent seasons, 2001 produced 366 salmon/grilse, and in 2004 the rods caught a total of 432 salmon/grilse.

Cost.

Rods cost £700 per season. Day tickets available on a Tuesday and Wednesday one week in every month, please enquire for details.

When Available.

Environment Agency close season regulations and rules concerning fishing methods and bait restrictions apply to each species.

Rules

The beat is run as a one day per week syndicated fishery with rods costing £700 per season. There are however day tickets available on a Tuesday and Wednesday one week in every month.

In common with most other beats on Eden, from the 16th June onwards, rods may take no more than 2 salmon and two sea trout per visit, and the beat owners strongly encourage rods to take no more than 1 salmon per rod visit.

Dogs must be kept strictly under control, and on a lead when any livestock are present.
Access

The beat is easily reached from exit 44 of the M6, by taking the Carlisle turn off, and then turning right at the first set of traffic lights, and following this road for approx 1.4 miles, turning left at the junction signposted Cargo, then taking a right hand turn into Cargo village at the turning thus marked. Drive straight though Cargo village, then down the track, and at the bottom of the hill, our gated car park is on the left hand side, about 50 yards further on.

The beat has a lock up car park, situated between the two beats, and there is further parking available towards the mid point, and lower end of the bottom beat.

A fishing hut is situated in the gated car park, which has gas cooking facilities and is kept fully stocked with tea coffee, soups, milk sugar etc.

For details of any season rod vacancies that may be available, or dates and costs of day ticket availability (One Tuesday & Wednesday in each month only) please contact the fishery manager at the address given, or email for details.
