Ullswater

The second largest lake in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, is 7.5 miles long, and ¾ mile wide, with a maximum depth of 205 feet at Howtown. Ullswater spans two geological fault lines, giving it three distinct bends and a dog's leg appearance.

It is located in a valley of stunning scenery and is surrounded by mountains. Many of the Lake District's most famous fell walks have their starting point here, including the magnificent trek to Helvellyn's summit via Striding Edge.

It should be visited for its excellent fishing, walking and the scenery, which has inspired a number of writers and artists throughout the ages, including J.M.W Turner, Constable, Southey and William and Dorothy Wordsworth who found inspiration for 'I wander'd lonely as a cloud...' (better known as 'Daffodils') and the Grasmere Journals respectively.

The National Trust offer free fishing on their parts of the lake for wild brown trout, char, perch and schelly.
