Appleby in Westmorland

Appleby is a picturesque market town which used to be the county town of Westmorland; the legal centre with Assize and County Courts. Situated in a great loop of the River Eden in Cumbria the town offers a variety of small shops selling local crafts and specialities.

In June each year, the 300 year old Appleby Horse Fair takes place; a colourful gathering of travelling people from all over the country, meeting to buy, sell and race horses and ponies.

Other unique festivals include the Rushbearing services held in the nearby villages of Great Musgrave and Warcop, and the Appleby Jazz Festival held every August.
