 Upper Eden: where to stay.
The River Eden begins on Mallerstang Common on the border between Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. Upper Eden is the area from the source of the river to Watersmeet, near Penrith, where the River Eden and the River Eamont join.
The river flows over moorland and past small villages and market towns, including Kirkby Stephen and Appleby in Westmorland.
The area is rich in beautiful scenery and ancient remains, near the source of the river is the mysterious Nine Standards Rigg and Kirkby Stephen church is home to the Loki Stone; an image thought to be the Norse devil Loki carved into a stone, hands and legs bound in irons. This stone is one of only two in Europe.
